Vietnamese canoeist Nguyen Thi Huong and rower Pham Thi Hue secured the eighth and ninth spots for Vietnam at the Paris 2024 Olympics at two separate qualification events on Sunday.

Competing in the women’s C1 200m category at the 2024 Asian Canoe Sprint Championships in Japan on Sunday, Huong secured an Olympic berth by finishing second in 49.351 seconds, just behind Nilufar Zokirova of Uzbekistan.

This victory marked the first time a Vietnamese canoeist will compete at the Olympics, a significant milestone for the nation’s sports.

On the same day, Hue earned Vietnam’s ninth Olympic spot by finishing in the top five at the women’s singles sculls final during the World Rowing Asian and Oceanian Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta in South Korea.

With Huong and Hue’s qualifications, Vietnam now has nine athletes set to compete at the Paris Games, scheduled for July 26 to August 11, leaving the country three short of its target of at least 12 Olympic spots this summer.

The seven other Vietnamese athletes qualified for Paris are swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang, cyclist Nguyen Thi That, markswomen Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen, boxer Vo Thi Kim Anh, weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh, and badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh.
