About 163 traffic accidents occurred nationwide over the past four days, from April 28 to May 1, killing 91 people, injuring 109 others, and leaving three more missing, the National Traffic Safety Committee reported on Friday.

>> 35 die per day over 9-day Tet holiday in Vietnam As such, nearly 23 people died per day on average over the four-day period, during which various activities were held across the country to celebrate the death anniversary of Hung Kings (lunar March 10, which falls on April 28), the Reunification Day (April 30), and the International Workers' Day or May Day (May 1). Of these accidents, 155 were on roads, killing 85 people and wounding 108 others; three occurred on the railway, leaving two dead and three injured; and five happened on waterway, claiming four lives and leaving three others missing. On Friday (May Day) alone, 28 people died, 43 others were wounded and one more went missing in 63 traffic accidents that happened nationwide, the committee said. During the same day, traffic police nationwide handled 9,802 traffic violations, issued fines totalling VND2.187 billion (US$101,930), impounded 38 cars and 1,420 motorbikes, and revoked 173 driver’s licenses. During the four-day period, the committee received more than 100 complaints regarding overcharging by some passenger transport firms, carrying more passengers than allowed limits by a number of vans, and other issues. On average, road accidents kill around 9,000 people in Vietnam every year – almost 25 deaths per day – and leave hundreds of thousands of others with life-time injuries, Transport Minister Dinh La Thang said at a requiem held in Ho Chi Minh City on November 10, 2014 for the dead victims of road accidents.

The event was held to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Road Traffic Accidents, which falls on the third Sunday of November each year.
