Liu Ngoc Hang, a university student who was reported missing after leaving her dormitory in Vietnam’s southern hub Ho Chi Minh City in January, has been found in China and is expected to return to Vietnam on Sunday.
Speaking with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday, Nguyen Viet Dung, the Vietnamese Consul General in Guangzhou, China’s Guangdong Province, confirmed that the Consulate General had contacted Hang's family, who informed the agency the discovery of Hang.
A day earlier, the family had emailed the Consulate General seeking assistance in finding Hang, a senior student at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, after losing contact with her for dozens of days, Dung said.
Hang's family reported that they had reached out to immigration authorities in Guangzhou, and had obtained information about Hang’s whereabouts.
She is expected to return to Vietnam on a flight departing on Saturday evening.
Hang's flight will transit through Hong Kong and is scheduled to land at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday.
Earlier, on February 3, Liu Xuong Menh, a resident of Song Nhan Commune, Cam My District, southern Dong Nai Province, reported to local police that he had lost contact with his 22-year-old daughter, Hang, for more than 10 days.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts to reach Hang, his family went to her dormitory on Tran Hung Dao Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, on January 26 to look for her.
There, they were informed that Hang had left on January 21, eight days before the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday and had not returned since.
Her relatives then posted her information and photos on social media, seeking help from the community.
Before Tet, Hang decided to stay in Ho Chi Minh City to do part-time jobs and earn money to pay for her tuition for the next semester.
