Police in Da Nang confirmed on Monday they were working to identify a foreigner who reportedly tried to crash his motorbike into an officer at a local COVID-19 checkpoint earlier the same day.

The foreign man approached the checkpoint at the intersection of Phan Ton and Le Quang Dao Streets in Ngu Hanh Son District on the motorbike, not wearing a helmet, at 8:00 am on Monday, according to initial information.

P.H.N., an officer stationed at the roadblock at that time, pulled the foreigner over, to which the expat yelled back before crossing the checkpoint on his motorbike.

The foreigner rode his motorbike back to the checkpoint ten minutes later and crashed the vehicle into N., who was standing on the sidewalk.

As N. managed to dodge the crash, the foreign man jumped off the motorbike and started chasing after the officer to attack him.

It was not until local residents arrived to check out on the noise that the foreign man stopped running after N. and returned to his motorbike and rode it away.

“With such an aggressive attitude, I knew he would come back,” N. told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper after the incident.

“Ten minutes later, he returned, crashed the motorbike into me, and chased after me,” N. said, adding that he managed to turn on his mobile phone’s camera to film part of the incident.

This supplied video was recorded on a Vietnamese officer's mobile phone as he was running away from the attack of a foreign man in Da Nang City, Vietnam, September 6, 2021.

The foreign man reportedly returned to his hotel room and locked the door after the event, according to the management board of the local neighborhood.

“Local residents complained that the foreigner had often behaved so aggressively,” a representative of the management board said.

“Police and officers stationed at the aforementioned checkpoint came to his hotel to clarify the case.”

Da Nang resumed operations for markets, online food shopping, and grocery stores in virus-free and low-risk areas on Sunday after a long halt for COVID-19 prevention, with people required to present travel passes and personal documents at checkpoints when traveling outdoors.

People living in areas at very high risk of infectios must continue following a shelter-in-place mandate.

The neighborhood where the aforesaid incident happened on Monday is marked as a virus-free area.
