Tons of stinking garbage have filled Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal in Ho Chi Minh City in recent days.
The garbage - mostly foam boxes, bottles, plastic bags, and discarded household appliances - has gathered into small floating piles on the canal, which runs about eight kilometers through seven districts, including District 1, District 3, District 10, Phu Nhuan District, Tan Binh District, Go Vap District, and Binh Thanh District.
Although sanitation workers clean up the canal every day, the situation persists, with garbage gradually clogging the water flow.
“Garbage in the canal is mainly discharged by local people and eateries,” said Bui Huu Phuoc, a resident of Tan Binh District.
“They are mainly plastic boxes and plastic bags.
“Many people often gather on the banks of the canal, bringing along food and beverage.
“After finishing eating and drinking, they throw the packages straight into the canal, ignoring trash bins and many ban signs.”
To make the situation worse, black wastewater and a strong, unbearable stench have accompanied the garbage, forcing many people to tightly cover their noses when traveling near the canal.
