Hue Central Hospital in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam on Friday said that their surgeons recently conducted an overnight procedure to successfully save the life of an American patient diagnosed with severe type A aortic dissection.
On October 25, the hospital received information regarding the American patient from Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital in neighboring Da Nang City at 5:00 pm.
An online consultation session between doctors in Thua Thien-Hue Province and Da Nang City led to the consensus that immediate emergency surgery was imperative to address the patient’s severe type A aortic dissection.
Subsequently, on the same night, the patient was transferred from Da Nang to Thua Thien-Hue for surgery.
Upon arrival in Hue Central Hospital at 11:00 pm, the patient showed life-threatening symptoms, including chest pain, nervousness, sweating, difficulty breathing, and low blood pressure.
The hospital activated the red alert protocol and held a multi-department consultation to identify the optimal life-saving solution.
At precisely 1:00 am on October 26, the patient underwent surgery, enduring a challenging five-hour procedure.
The surgery was successful, and the patient was stabilized and transferred to the recovery department by 6:00 am.
Post-surgery, the patient recovered well without any unusual complications.
Currently, the patient is in stable condition, engaging in daily activities as usual, and was discharged from the hospital on Friday.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hung, deputy head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Hue Central Hospital, explained that type A thoracic aortic dissection is a critical and urgent cardiovascular condition.
It occurs when the aorta’s wall separates or tears, leading to blood leakage into the outermost layer of the artery.
This condition can result in various complications, including reduced blood supply to the heart muscle, heart failure, and other life-threatening issues, thus requiring prompt surgical intervention to prevent potential fatalities.
Hue Central Hospital has successfully completed 10 heart transplants, nine of which were performed for patients from other localities across the country, according to Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, director of the institution.
Annually, the hospital conducts over 1,000 open heart surgeries, nearly 700 thoracic surgeries, and more than 500 vascular surgeries.
