French aircraft manufacturer Airbus has provided Vietnam with satellite images of some of the areas most severely affected by typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam, with a view to supporting rescue and relief efforts as well as assisting in assessing damage, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

General director of Airbus Vietnam Hoang Tri Mai handed Pléiades optical satellite images and TerraSAR-X radar satellite images to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang at a meeting on Tuesday with French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet.

These satellite images show the most submerged areas in Hanoi and the provinces of Yen Bai, Bac Giang, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, and Thai Nguyen.

The satellite images will aid in effectively deploying rescue and relief operations, accurately assessing the losses caused by the typhoon, and optimizing the use of mobilized resources, according to Airbus.

The images will assist emergency response teams and disaster relief organizations in creating detailed maps and concrete plans for reaching affected areas, especially those inaccessible by road and posing safety risks to rescuers or relief workers.

Deputy Minister Hang expressed her appreciation and gratitude for the timely support from the French government and business communities, including Airbus, as well as other international partners.

She commended their assistance in helping Vietnam overcome the severe consequences of the typhoon, along with the resulting floods and landslides.

Hang commented that the Vietnam-France strategic partnership has developed successfully, especially in science, technology, and aerospace, with the active contribution of Airbus.

She believed the two countries would continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation and contribute to the common effort to respond to global challenges, especially climate change.

French Ambassador Brochet highly praised the efforts of the Vietnamese government and people in responding to the aftermath of Yagi, which made landfall in northern Vietnam on September 7.

Emphasizing the need for international cooperation in response to natural disasters and extreme weather patterns caused by climate change, the diplomat affirmed that France would support Vietnam in remediating the consequences of the typhoon.

Headquartered in France’s Toulouse, Airbus is the largest aeronautics and space company in Europe, and also one of the biggest aircraft manufacturers in the world.

The partnership between Airbus and Vietnam dates back nearly 30 years, and many of the group’s products, such as helicopters and civil and transport aircraft, operate safely in Vietnam.

One of the important milestones in the cooperation between the two sides came on May 7, 2013, when Vietnam's first earth observation satellite VNREDSat-1, provided by Airbus, was successfully launched into orbit.

At a conference held last year to mark the 10th anniversary of the VNREDSat-1 launch, delegates said that the satellite was still stable and providing high-quality images of the earth.
