Big waves have eroded many areas along the coast in Da Nang City, central Vietnam over the past few days with the most severely eroded area being My Khe Beach, which was voted as one of the best beaches in the world in 2006.

At some sites, waves have eroded the coastline by more than two meters, causing many coconut trees to be swept out to the sea.

Waves have also damaged many stalls there.

Most beaches along Vo Nguyen Giap Street, where high-end resorts are located, face severe erosion.

Waves have washed away the sand around coconut trees along the seawall, exposing their roots.

On some days, waves are only 20 meters from a coastal road.

Nguyen Thi Tiet, a local resident, said My Khe Beach was eroded in previous years but the consequences were not as severe as those this year.

Phan Minh Hai, deputy head of the management board of Son Tra Peninsula and tourism beaches in Da Nang City, said the serious coastal erosion had occurred over the past two to three days.

The management board has reinforced eroded sites and collected coconut trees for replanting in the coming time.

The board has also called on household businesses to relocate assets to prevent losses and will continue keeping a close watch on the incident to work out response measures, Hai noted.
