Vietnam booked a ticket to the final of the 2019 AFF Women's Championship following their hard-fought triumph over the Philippines in the semifinals in Thailand on Sunday.
The Vietnamese were in control as the favorites in the first half-hour but no goal was scored, with just a few dangerous attacks.
The Philippines unexpectedly opened the scoring on 35 minutes thanks to an own goal by a Vietnamese defender.
A back pass from the defender caught goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh off guard so the shot-stopper failed to return to the woodwork and block the ball.
This comical goal drove Mai Duc Chung’s players to stage more attacks and they narrowly missed a chance in the 36th minute.
But the Vietnamese managed to level in the 41st minute after a short-range shot by Huynh Nhu.
Vietnam continued to score 56 minutes into the game, with a classy Tuyet Dung finish.
In the remaining time, both sides did not net any more goal.
Vietnam will take on either hosts Thailand or Myanmar, who are playing the other semifinal game at the time of writing, on August 27.
The 2019 AFF Women's Championship is the 10th edition of the international women's football tournament organized by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF).
The ongoing tournament takes place in Chonburi from August 15 to 27, with the Thais being the defending champions.
Vietnam won this championship in 2006 and 2012.
