The Vietnamese student team participating in the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in the UK won five medals including two silvers and three bronzes, along with an honorable mention, the Ministry of Education and Training announced on Saturday.

The 2024 IMO took place in the British city of Bath from July 11 to 22 (local time), with the participation of 609 contestants from 108 countries and territories.

The two silver medals went to Tran Duy, a 12th grader at High School for Gifted Students under the Hanoi National University of Education, and Tran Minh Hoang, an 11th-grade student at High School for Gifted Students in north-central Ha Tinh Province.

Two of the three bronzes were awarded to Pham Tran Minh Duc, a 12th grader from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students in northern Hai Phong City, and Nguyen Dang Dung, a grade-11 student from High School for Gifted Students of the Hanoi University of Science under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi.

The other bronze was presented to Nguyen Van Hoang, a 12th-grade student at Bac Ninh High School for Gifted Students in northern Bac Ninh Province.

The last of the six-member team, Ta Duc Anh, a grade-12 student from High School for Gifted Students under the Hanoi National University of Education, got an honorable mention.

With a total score of 118 points, Vietnam ranked 33rd in the list of countries and territories participating in the 2024 IMO, down 27 places compared to last year’s competition, according to VTC News.

According to the IMO guidelines, the competition involves teams of up to six contestants aged 14-18 sitting two exams on consecutive days, with each exam lasting for 4.5 hours for three math problems.

Each problem is worth seven points for a maximum total score of 42 points.

This year, the minimum scores for a gold, silver, and bronze medal were set at 29, 22, and 16 points, respectively.

In every competition, contestants who do not win a medal but score seven points on at least one problem receive an honorable mention.

The award presentation ceremony has been scheduled for 4:00 pm on July 21 in the UK (local time).

In last year’s IMO in Japan, the six-member Vietnamese student team got better achievements with two golds, two silvers, and two bronzes.

The IMO has been an annual event since 1959 and Vietnamese students began taking part in the competition in 1974.
