Vietnamese chess player Tong Thai Hoang An clinched the silver medal in the Girls U12 event at the World Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2023 held in Batumi, Georgia on Sunday.
Being the fifth seed with an Elo rating of 1,459, An delivered a remarkable performance in the tournament, securing eight wins, two draws, and only one loss in her 11 games.
As a result, she accumulated nine points, earning her the silver medal.
Altynbek Aiaru from Kazakhstan won the event with 10.5 points after an impressive record of 10 victories out of 11 games, with her sole draw occurring in the match against An.
Aside from An’s silver medal, three other Vietnamese chess players Le Phan Hoang Quan, Dau Khuong Duy, and Nguyen Hong Nhung also secured three bronze medals in the Boys U8, Boys U12, and Girls U18 blitz chess categories, respectively.
In the preceding rapid chess competitions, Le Thai Hoang Anh, Dau Khuong Duy, and Pham Tran Gia Phuc displayed exceptional performances, securing three gold medals in the Girls U12, Boys U12, and Boys U14 categories, respectively.
There were also two other silver medals and one additional bronze medal.
The World Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2023, co-hosted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Georgian Chess Federation, is scheduled to take place from June 5 to 12, uniting 462 chess players from 35 countries and territories.
Vietnam is represented in the tournament by a contingent of 13 talented young chess players.
