Quakes hit Quang Nam, Son La provinces again

The Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant area in central Quang Nam province was hit by a quake on Sunday, while another incident struck northern Son La province a day earlier.

>> Strongest quake in 55 years hits Quang Nam The quakes are slight; both measured 2.6 on the Richter scale, the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center under the Institute of Global Physics reported. The quake that hit Son La occurred at 12:55 pm on January 11, with its epicenter located about 9 kilometers underground, the center said. This is a weak quake and caused no damage, but it is not the first to hit the province. On August 6, 2013, a 2.1 degree quake occurred in an area near the Son La Hydropower Plant, in Muong La District. Another much stronger quake, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, hit an area in Bac Yen District, 37 km southeast of the plant, at noon on November 26, 2009. On the evening of the same day, another quake measuring 4.2 degrees hit the same area.      Quake hits Song Tranh 2 hydroplant area again On Sunday, January 12, at 10:19 am, a slight quake hit the hydro plant area in Bac Tra My District. The epicenter of the quake was about 5.5 kilometers underground. Over the past few years, many earthquakes have occurred in this district, with the latest, which measured 2 on the Richter scale, occurring on November 25, 2013. The strongest quake to hit the district since 1957 occurred on November 15, 2012. The quake, which measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, struck about three weeks after a 4.6 degree quake occurred in the district on October 23, 2012. The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center is continuing to observe seismic vibrations in both areas of the recent earthquakes in Quang Nam and Son La.
