New CEO of debt-ridden taxi operator quits after 8 days

Friday, September 20, 2013, 15:30 GMT+7

Bui Bich Lan, the new CEO of taxi operator Mai Linh, has decided to quit her job after just one week in the post, despite a monthly salary of VND80 million (US$4,000) and a bonus of 200,000 shares at Mai Linh.

Lan, 51, is a board member of the Vinaconex – Viettel Finance Joint Stock Company (VVF). She is also the CEO and chairman of the board of members of Investconnect Co Ltd. Lan was appointed as the new CEO of Mai Linh in an extraordinary shareholders' meeting held on August 12.

Lan initially agreed to take the CEO spot from August 12 to November 11.

However, on September 13, Mai Linh organized another meeting to approve Lan’s request for resignation, only eight days after she officially took the CEO position on September 5. Ho Huy, former chairman of the debt-beleaguered Mai Linh Group, has been reappointed as the group's CEO, starting from the afternoon of September 13.

In 2012, Mai Linh, the second-largest taxi operator in Ho Chi Minh City after Vinasun, mobilized around VND500 billion ($24.04 million) from 800 individual investors to fund its operations, but it is now financially incapable of repaying these debts on time.

On December 28, on the official website of Mai Linh Group, Huy posted a message calling on all employees to support the firm to overcome the current difficulties by voluntarily contributing one day's earnings to the firm, while senior officials were asked to voluntarily cut their salaries.
