The transport authority of Ho Chi Minh City looks to achieve a 100 percent adoption and usage of electric vehicles (EV) in the outlying district of Can Gio and some areas in the city in a bid to cope with car emissions and improve the air quality.
Tran Quang Lam, director of the municipal Department of Transport, put forward this plan at a regular press briefing on Thursday morning.
Lam said the southern metropolis pays much heed to measures to tackle greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.
The transport authority is seeking financial support from the municipal People’s Council to facilitate the switch from fuel-powered vehicles such as taxis, buses, state-owned cars to EVs.
Under the plan, once the Can Gio bridge project is put into service, there will be a parking garage to house non-electric cars seeking to enter Can Gio.
Passengers on non-EVs will be transported to various parts in Can Gio via public transit EVs.
The transport official also provided information regarding the municipal transport sector’s performance in the year to date and its plan to satisfy the travel demand during the five-day public holiday starting Saturday.
Besides, the relevant units are speeding up efforts to break ground on the Beltway No.3 project as planned.
He also pointed out some lower-than-expected business results of the sector in the first quarter, including the declining cargo throughput via seaports and inland waterway terminals across the city and low disbursement rates of public capital.
Further, the transport department in coordination with relevant agencies are studying procedures and policies to facilitate the development of urban railway and beltway projects.
