The number of visitors to the Minh Chau-Quan Lan tourist area in Van Don District in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam has fallen about 35 percent to roughly 12,700 tourists per week due to frequent blackouts caused by the ongoing drought, according to the Van Don People’s Committee.
The figure was forecast to drop further in the following weeks if power cuts remain.
The inadequate power supply has sent the revenue from services plunging and hit the district’s image, reducing the number of visitors to Van Don during the peak summer travel season.
Island communes in Van Don often welcome 19,000-25,000 tourist arrivals per week during the peak travel time, according to the local People’s Committee.
Therefore, the district has proposed the People’s Committee of Quang Ninh Province, the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, and Quang Ninh Power Company prioritize around-the-clock power supply to the Minh Chau-Quan Lan tourist area.
The People’s Committee of Van Don District is committed to seriously complying with electricity saving plans, and regularly inspecting and asking individuals and organizations to use power sparingly in production and business as required by the provincial administration.

Quang Ninh Power Company said it had publicized power cut plans in the province to minimize the impact on production and business activities.
Key tourist sites in Ha Long City, the capital of Quang Ninh, will receive priority to serve tourism development.
The company will make the power cut schedule more specific and shorten outage durations.
In particular, it will suspend the power supply for five hours per day on average on each transmission line and will not cut the power in Bai Chay, Hung Thang, and Tuan Chau Wards and the area from Tran Quoc Nghien coastal road to the Quang Ninh Museum on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons.
However, this is just a plan and it may be adjusted, said Nguyen Dai Cuong, director of Ha Long Power Company.
Ha Long Power Company currently has over 110,000 customers, the largest number of customers in Quang Ninh Province, with the total power consumption volume of some 543 million kilowatt hours in the first five months of this year.
During hot days, the city’s power consumption often surges 30-35 percent.
