A coal company in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam has presented fish as Tet gifts to its 3,700 employees.

Cua Ong Coal Company has spent nearly VND5 billion (US$203,250) buying 18 metric tons of fresh groupers to award to its employees.

The firm has also offered its employees bonuses to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, which is due in February.

Its purchase has contributed to boosting the consumption of the fish grown in bulk in Quang Ninh.

The company's gesture of providing groupers to its employees is not a novel occurrence, stated a representative of the firm under the Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Holding Corporation on Saturday.

The coal producer spent a combined VND5 billion purchasing groupers for its workers on some special holidays from 2021 to 2023.

Each employee at the firm is slated to receive five kilograms of fresh groupers, a 13th-month bonus totaling around VND13 million ($528.5), and additional gifts as Tet presents for the year 2024.

Some other Quang Ninh-based companies under the corporation have given groupers to their employees ahead of the Tet holiday.

Among them is Hon Gai Coal Company.

Most of these employees live in the province, so it is easy for them to transport the fish to their homes.

Despite facing the economic slowdown in 2023, Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Holding Corporation fulfilled all of its targets, providing a record volume of coal for power generation.

The corporation contributed some VND29 trillion ($1.2 billion) to the state budget last year, marking its biggest contribution to the coffers so far.

The corporation made VND170 trillion ($6.9 billion) in revenue and generated a profit of an estimated VND6 trillion ($244 million) in 2023.
