Flower festival expected to attract 500,000 visitors to Vietnam’s Central Highlands city

Flower festival expected to attract 500,000 visitors to Vietnam’s Central Highlands city

The annual 2015 Da Lat Flower Festival will kick off later this year in Da Lat, the capital of the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, promising multiple activities to lure visitors, the organizers said on Tuesday.

The festival will run from December 29, 2015 to January 2, 2016, under the theme of “Da Lat – Colorful Flowers,” the Da Lat administration said at the event’s promotion ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City.

There will be nine main programs and 19 sub-activities during the five festive days, according to the organizers.

There will be a “space of flowers” set up around Da Lat’s iconic Xuan Huong Lake, while Le Dai Hanh Street will be turned into a street of flowers, and Ho Tung Mau Street will become a hub showcasing the city’s famous coffee, tea, wine and other specialties.

Other activities include a fireworks display, a flower and vegetable flea market, and a ceremony to honor flower growers.

Fifteen businesses and 110 local flower farmers will be featured at the event as typical examples of Da Lat’s traditional flower growing sector.

“The festival is not only meant to promote tourism, but also to honor flower growers, and to let everyone know that Da Lat is famous for its flowers,” the city’s chairman Vo Ngoc Hiep said.

“Each of the growers to be honored at the festival earns at least VND1 billion [US$44,643] for every hectare of their flower producing farms.”

What is new about this year’s festival is that it will be funded mostly by the private sector instead of the province’s own budget, Hiep added.

“This is a big change as the state only finances part of the event, and flower growers and businesses will account for up to 80 percent of the funding,” he said.

Hiep added that the total cost of the festival is not yet available.

But the city’s administration is hoping the fest will attract around 500,000 visitors to boost tourism.

In previous years, the festival attracted around 400,000 to 450,000 visitors.
