For years, 'ốc đá' (a snail which is often found at rocky springs and rivers) has been a delicacy amongst local residents in Tan Hoa Commune, Quang Binh Province.

The local delicacy, often a treat for friends and tourists, has led to more than just satisfied pallets; it has created a new job for local women: snail diving.

Snail diving is not for the weak and weary. Only strong, healthy women are able to patiently wait in the cold water to catch the snails.

A snail diver’s day begins early in the morning with a mountain to climb up to the springs where the snails live. Those who can handle the cold stick to diving at night when the snails are easier to catch.

The Rao Nay River that runs through Tan Hoa and Cao Mai Communes is known as the prime hunting ground for the snails.

Workers strong enough to handle life as a snail diver typically make about VND120,000 (US$5.36) a day.

Below are a series of photos by Ngoc Duong featuring the women and their tough job.

These photos were one of the entries to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper's year-long competition themed “Vietnam – Country – People" concluding in October.

The ‘snail diving season’ often starts in February and ends in late July, when the water is warmer and water levels are low. The cold water at the beginning of the season means more difficult diving.

Snails are sold at Quy Dat Market, the largest market in Minh Hoa District. Snails are also sold to local restaurants.

Many snail divers walk two hours through springs and caves to get to snail-filled springs.
