Vietnam and Indonesia have vowed to strengthen their strategic partnership during Vietnamese Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to Jakarta from August 22 to 24.
Trong, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, joined talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Jakarta on Wednesday morning to discuss measures aimed at enhancing the two nations’ political trust, friendship, cooperation, and strategic partnership.
The two leaders each expressed their satisfaction with the positive developments in the Vietnam- Indonesia relationship over the past 60 years.
In 2016, the two countries’ bilateral trade turnover reached nearly US$6 billion.
Both leaders also agreed that their countries will continue to provide favorable conditions for local businesses to invest and operate in such fields as oil and gas, food processing, agriculture, and coal mining, striving towards a goal of $10 billion in bilateral turnover.
According to President Widodo, the top priorities for the Vietnam-Indonesia relationship will be directed towards collaboration in maritime affairs, fishery, trade, investment, and regional and international issues.
He and General Secretary Trong reached consensus on measures to deepen the two nations’ strategic partnership in order to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.
Both parties vowed to continue their coordination efforts in dealing with common issues, including terrorism, piracy, arms race, and nuclear weapons proliferation.
The two nations will support each other at international forums, namely the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the United Nations.
On the evening of the same day, General Secretary Trong attended a banquet hosted by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
During his speech, the Vietnamese Party chief called on Indonesian businesses to extend their operations to Vietnam, promising that the country would create a perfect investment environment.
