​Canadian premier welcomed in Hanoi

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has arrived in Hanoi for an official visit to Vietnam, before his attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) week in the central city of Da Nang.

PM Trudeau touched down in the Vietnamese capital on Wednesday morning, commencing his official trip to the Southeast Asian nation on November 8 and 9.

A welcome ceremony hosted by Vietnamese PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc was held at the Presidential Palace on the afternoon of the same day.

The two heads of government will then join talks and chair a press meeting.

The Canadian leader is also slated to meet State President Tran Dai Quang, chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong in the evening.

After his agenda in Hanoi, the Canadian premier will then head to Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday morning, where he will meet with Vietnamese business leaders, and participate in an armchair discussion at Ton Duc Thang University.

He will later travel to Da Nang to attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, where he is expected to promote Canada as a partner of choice for trade and investment in the region, and deepen economic cooperation with APEC economies.

Following his business trip in Vietnam, PM Trudeau will travel to the Philippines to attend the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Manila.

Born in 1971 in Ottawa, Trudeau is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada and was appointed the prime minister of Canada on November 4, 2015.

Established in 1989, APEC is a regional economic forum established in 1989 and comprised of 21 member economies, including Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam, among others.

Running from November 6 to 11, the  Economic Leaders’ Week is expected to be attended by world leaders including United States President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
