Vietnam’s field hospital in South Sudan honored with UN peacekeeping medals

Sixty-three staff members of Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital No. 3 (Field Hospital 2.3) in Bentiu, South Sudan, have been awarded the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Medals for their dedication and outstanding contributions to UN missions.
Since the field hospital was first put into operation in Bentiu on March 26, 2021, it has provided healthcare services and treatment to more than 1,400 UN staff and local people, successfully carried out over 16 complex surgeries, and supported 15 air ambulance missions, Lieu. Col. Trinh My Hoa, director of the Level-2 Field Hospital, said at the award presentation ceremony on Wednesday.
The hospital has also applied new techniques to both diagnosis and treatment, implemented COVID-19 prevention work and vaccination, provided oxygen for patients in need, and treated medical waste for level-1 hospitals in the mission area.

Additionally, it has run a series of environmental protection campaigns, used recycled materials for decoration, and hosted workshops and training courses on improving medical skills and updating medical knowledge.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hiroko Hirahara, head of the UN Mission Field Office in Bentiu, expressed his appreciation for the dedication and contributions of Vietnamese healthcare workers.
“We are happy to receive positive feedback on what the field hospital has done. I deeply appreciate all of your contributions,” said Hirahara.

Brig. Gen. Dhananjay, acting commander of the UN Mission in South Sudan, also spoke highly of the hospital's role in helping locals with HIV/AIDS consulting, sharing medicine and medical equipment with local hospitals, and donating devices and school supplies to students.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense approved the establishment of Field Hospital 2.3 in March 2020 with 70 staff members, mainly from Military Hospital 175, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Military Zones 2,7,9, and Army Corps 4.
Vietnam has so far hosted three field hospitals in South Sudan.
The first field hospital was opened in October 2018 and the second was launched in November 2019.
