The Japanese government has conferred a Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, former Chairwoman of Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly, for her great contribution to bilateral ties between Japan and Vietnam.

The Japanese Embassy in Vietnam on Monday announced that two Vietnamese were honored in autumn this year.

The other is former Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Doan Xuan Hung, who was awarded an Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.

The Japanese government gave these orders to the two for their efforts in strengthening the two countries’ friendship and partnership.

The Order of the Rising Sun dates back some 150 years under the reign of Emperor Meiji.

The Order has been awarded in several classes, with different insignias attached.

The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun is ranked the first class, while the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star is the second class.

Japan has previously awarded the Order of the Rising Sun to many Vietnamese individuals for their contributions to the promotion of bilateral ties.

Ngan served as Chairwoman of the National Assembly from July 2016 to March 2021.

During her term, she met with many Japanese officials and worked with them to foster bilateral relations.

In particular, she had talks with Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko during their state visit to Vietnam in March 2017.

Furthermore, Ngan chaired a reception for late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2017 and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in 2020.

When she held the post as Vice-Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Ngan paid a visit to Japan in August 2015.

Hung served as Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan between 2011 and 2015.

During his tenure, he witnessed the establishment of an extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia between Vietnam and Japan in 2014.

Thanks to his contribution, people-to-people exchanges and bilateral trade cooperation made great strides.

In 2011, some 7,000 Vietnamese traveled to Japan for work. The figure surged to 30,000 in 2015.

Japan and Vietnam set up diplomatic ties in 1973.

A series of activities have been organized to mark the 50th anniversary of their relationship in 2023.
