Indonesian President Joko Widodo will pay a state visit to Vietnam from Thursday to Saturday this week at the invitation of Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Indonesian president will be the first foreign leader to officially visit Vietnam this year.
During the working trip, he will attend a welcome ceremony chaired by State President Thuong.
They will later hold talks to discuss the two countries’ bilateral cooperation issues and plans for the near future.
Indonesian news agencies had earlier reported that President Widodo would visit three ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines, and Brunei, from Tuesday to Sunday this week to enhance the relations between Jakarta and the three regional countries.
Widodo’s visit to Vietnam comes at a time when the two sides’ relationship is flourished in politics, economy, and trade.
2023 marked the 10th anniversary of the two countries’ strategic partnership.
Vietnam and Indonesia established diplomatic relations in 1955 and entered into a strategic partnership in 2013.
In Southeast Asia, Indonesia is Vietnam’s third-largest trade partner, while Vietnam is Indonesia’s fourth-largest trade partner, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Trade between the two countries amounted to US$14.1 billion last year, nearly triple the $4.8 billion in 2013.
The two sides set a target to raise their two-way trade to over $15 billion before 2028 while fostering cooperation in digital economy, digital transformation, the green economy, and renewable energy.
