Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his spouse are scheduled to pay an official visit to Vietnam on March 25-26 shortly after the two nations elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The two-day visit, at the invitation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his spouse, marks PM Wong's first trip to Vietnam since he took office in May 2024, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It follows the recent upgrade of bilateral relationship during Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam's official visit to Singapore from March 11 to 13, 2025, at the invitation of PM Wong, who also serves as the Secretary-General of Singapore's People's Action Party.

PM Wong highlighted that this is Singapore's first comprehensive strategic partnership with an ASEAN country.

According to the joint statement on the upgraded relationship, both nations are committed to strengthening political trust, expanding mutually beneficial cooperation, and effectively addressing common challenges.

The partnership is founded on respect for international law, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and each other's political systems, without interference in internal affairs.

Both countries anticipate that this cooperation will bring tangible benefits to their citizens and contribute to building a united, resilient, and inclusive ASEAN. The goal is to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development regionally and globally.

Based on the upgraded partnership, both sides focus on enhancing cooperation for global peace, security, and stability; strengthening economic collaboration and promoting mutually beneficial sectors; increasing cooperation in energy and green growth; building capacity and connecting people; and boosting cooperation in the digital field and emerging technologies.

Since 1996, Singapore has been one of Vietnam's top economic partners. In 2024, bilateral trade reached over US$23.7 billion, a 9.47 percent increase from 2023, the Vietnam Government Portal reported, citing data from the Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore.

In the first two months of 2025, two-way trade exceeded $4.91 billion, marking a 27.15 percent year-on-year increase, positioning Vietnam as Singapore's ninth-largest trading partner.

In terms of investment, Singapore is the largest ASEAN investor in Vietnam and ranks second among 147 countries and territories investing here, with 3,915 active projects totaling over $83 billion.

Singaporean investors are present in 54 of Vietnam's 63 provinces and cities, involving a wide range of economic sectors, primarily focusing on manufacturing, real estate, and energy distribution.
