Joyce Msuya, United Nations (UN) Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, allocated US$2 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to kickstart the humanitarian response in support of the Vietnamese government’s post-Yagi efforts, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced at a press briefing on Friday.

Typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam earlier this month, killing more than 290 people and damaging 237,000 homes.

Some three million people in total have been affected, according to a transcript of the briefing released by the UN the same day.

“The funding will go to the IOM [International Organization for Migration], the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN Children’s Fund [UNICEF] to meet immediate needs in the most impacted areas of Yen Bai and Lao Cai,” he stated, referring to two heavily-impacted provinces in northern Vietnam.

The CERF-funded response will focus on emergency shelter and water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance, concentrating on communities with high levels of pre-existing vulnerabilities, according to the transcript.

Yagi is the most powerful storm to have entered the East Vietnam Sea over the past 30 years, and the worst typhoon to have hit Vietnam in the past 70 years, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
