In just over a year, the Saigon River bank area on the Thu Thiem side in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City has undergone a remarkable transformation to become a vibrant, thriving space, with blooming flowers, dazzling lights, and music.
In August 2023, the natural environment along the Saigon River bank on the Thu Thiem side was still plagued by mudflats, pollution from waste, and dust, which marred the area’s scenic beauty, especially around Bach Dang Wharf in downtown Ho Chi Minh City.
At that time, the Thu Thiem riverside was dominated by a dirt road, with several unfinished and deteriorating sections and the aging Ong Cay Bridge.

However, in late 2024, Thu Duc City, along with relevant units and companies, ramped up efforts to revamp the area.
The city planned to house a sunflower field skirting part of the Saigon River to delight residents and tourists during the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet 2024.
During Tet 2024, the sunflower garden became a popular attraction.
Over the past year, the area continued to be developed, with more projects completed to enhance its appeal.
Currently, the two riverbanks have achieved a more balanced esthetic.
On the District 1 side, visitors can enjoy views of towering skyscrapers and monumental structures, while Thu Duc City’s riverside features lush green parks and recreational areas that host large-scale cultural and entertainment events.
The iconic Ba Son Bridge now stands tall and is illuminated at night, acting as a link between the two riverbanks.
The revitalization of the Saigon River bank on the Thu Thiem side was financed by private business contributions, relieving the government’s budget while still ensuring significant improvements to the area.
Nguyen Kim Toan, director of Daily Co., Ltd., said that his company was responsible for the investment, operation, maintenance, and development of the riverside’s facilities, including a multi-functional community center, a stone park, and a boat terminal.
This was part of a plan to revitalize the Saigon River bank area, which stretches approximately 830 meters in length and 50 meters in width from the Ba Son Bridge to Thu Thiem Tunnel on the Thu Thiem side in Thu Duc.
The plan consisted of building a new boat terminal to expand water-based transportation options in line with the city’s long-term transport strategy.
The renovation was meant to create an attractive destination that brings together locals and visitors, offering cultural, artistic, entertainment, and culinary experiences.
