A fourth-grade student was fatally struck by lightning while he was cycling home after school in the north-central Vietnamese province of Ha Tinh on Monday afternoon.

Authorities in Bui La Nhan Commune in the province’s Duc Tho District confirmed on Monday evening that the victim was 10-year-old Nguyen Duy Tr..

While Tr. was cycling home from Yen Ho Elementary School at 4:00 pm that day, a lightning strike knocked him off his bicycle about 200 meters away from his house.

Local people saw the incident and rushed Tr. to the commune healthcare station for emergency treatment, but he could not make it.

Tr. was the second child in a family with two boys.

Their family is struggling with financial difficulties, with their parents working as day laborers all year round.

Tr.’s body was handed over to his family for funeral rituals.

Local authorities have come to his house to express condolences.

On Monday afternoon, it rained heavily in many areas in Ha Tinh, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Some streets in the center of Ha Tinh City, the provincial capital, were lightly inundated, causing obstacles to commutes.

From now to April 30, heavy rains and thunderstorms are in the forecast for the north-central region from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue Provinces.

During the thunderstorms, there will be a chance of whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong winds.
