The ongoing severe heatwave in Vietnam’s northern and central regions will escalate in many days to come, the central weather agency has warned.

The scorching hot weather came from the combination of the Foehn effect, caused by the southwest wind, and the wind divergence at a high elevation, the Climate Forecasting Department under the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said on Saturday.

Many localities in the northern and central regions have been suffering from the fierce heatwave and several of them have seen their new ‘August heat records’ established, the department reported.

The recent temperature of 39.5 degrees Celsius in Lao Cai Province surpassed the former record of 38.9 degrees Celsius on August 18, 2016.

In Lang Son Province, the temperature hit 37.7 degrees Celsius on August 5, which is above the old high of 37 degrees Celsius on August 22, 1990.

In Hanoi, it was as hot as 39 degrees Celsius on August 6, compared to 38.5 degrees on August 13, 2019.

Quang Nam has experienced temperatures of up to 40.5 degrees Celsius, Quang Ngai 40.1 degrees Celsius, Da Nang and Phu Yen 40 degrees Celsius, Khanh Hoa 39.7 degrees Celsius, and Ha Giang and Cao Bang 39.5 degrees Celsius.

The current bout, which kicked off on July 25, will cool down in the northern region on Tuesday before possibly resuming on Thursday in the northern delta and lasting for several days, the department said.

The sizzling hot weather will keep affecting central provinces from now until the end of August, but less severely than currently.

After this large-scale heatwave, the northern and central regions will enter the rainy season, said the agency.

Following the recent storm Lupit, there will be up to 10 storms and tropical depressions hitting the East Vietnam Sea from now until year end, of which four or five may directly affect Vietnam, the department forecast.

The agency also warned that downpours might occur repeatedly in the central region in October and November.
