A Hanoi man and his neighbor have been arrested on murder charges after beating to death a thief who had killed and stolen his dogs.

Police in Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi confirmed on Wednesday they had apprehended and initiated legal proceedings against Pham Van Hai, 64, and Ngo Van Cuong, 49.

Early on the morning of December 30, Hai saw a man on a motorbike and suspected he was trying to steal the dogs owned by Cuong – his neighbor.

After receiving a phone call from Hai, Cuong checked on his dogs and found that one of them had died while the other was missing.

Cuong and Hai planned on ambushing the thief as they believed he would return to take the remaining canine away.

As the suspect returned to the house at around 1:30 am the same day, Hai blocked his exit while Cuong attacked him with a wooden stick.

The thief died on the spot after receiving a direct hit in the head.

Cuong and Hai later reported the case and turned themselves in to police officers.

Police are working to identify the victim and verify further details of the case.
