Police in Ha Long City of Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam on Friday arrested a man from Ho Chi Minh City after he attempted to rob a local bank using a backpack suspected of containing bombs.

At around 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon, the man in question entered Vietcombank's Bai Chay branch in Ha Long City and yelled that there were bombs in the red backpack he was carrying.

“I have two bombs, give me the money or I’ll blow it up,” a witness recounted the robber’s saying.

The man then climbed up the counter and tried to get through a glass barrier, but failed.

As the siren went off, he was startled and ran out to the gate of the establishment, where he was quickly controlled by the bank’s security forces and local police.

Police officers then identified the robber as Tran Minh Quang, living in Ho Chi Minh City and possessing a student card at a university in the United States.

Before running away, the man took a mobile phone from a receptionist at the bank branch.

The specialized force later checked and determined that there were no bombs inside the man's backpack, according to Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper, while the robber was taken to the police headquarters for further investigation.
