Three elementary school students from the northern Vietnamese province of Dien Bien drowned on Wednesday in the stretch of the Ma River which runs through Muong Luan Commune, Dien Bien Dong District.
Lo Van Mai, chairman of Muong Luan Commune, confirmed the deadly incident later the same day.
L.V.B., 8, L.V.T., 7, L.V.K., 7, and L.V.Th. had been playing near the Ma River after school at around 12:00 pm on Wednesday.
B., T., and K. then decided to go into the water while Th. looked on from the riverbank.
The deep water and strong current pulled all three children under.
Th. then ran to find help, but by the time anyone arrived it was too late.
The bodies of the three victims were recovered at 1:30 pm the same day.
All three victims were Thai ethnic people from poverty-stricken families.
Local authorities visited their houses and offered their families financial support to cover funeral costs.
