A famous park in the north-central Vietnamese province of Nghe An has been deserted for many years and now faces an unclear future following its faded glory.

The Vinh City central park project, covering an area of nearly 26 hectares in the heart of Nghe An’s capital city, was originally powered by many artisans and businesspeople, who hailed from the province but were building their career in Ho Chi Minh City, as a way of contribution to their hometown.

It opened to visitors for the first time in June 2005 and was subject to adjustment under a planning decision issued by the provincial People’s Committee in July 2014.

However, new works were never implemented while items that were completed and put into operation before the 2014 planning decision are now in disrepair due to lack of investment, according to Nghe An newspaper.

The park used to attract many visitors as a popular place featuring various attractions for recreation, entertainment and weekend retreat.

However, that glory has faded as people rarely visit in recent years.

Grass has grown along Song Long Street, which connects the park’s entrance with its themed areas, while moss covers the ground, fences, swings, and other game zones.

The cosmos projection house - once famous for being the only place in Vietnam to popularize astronomical science and a top destination for students to study astronomy - now has its entrance locked and the yard has been taken over by weeds.

The row of houses built to simulate the UNESCO-recognized Hoi An Ancient Town in Quang Nam Province became a place for growing plants and storing scraps.

In stark contrast, cafés and restaurants have mushroomed on the park’s area facing Le Mao Street.

Different inspection trips of competent departments and agencies have come to the same conclusion that many construction works at the park failed to stick to the 2014 planning decision.

It remains unclear about Nghe An authorities’ solutions to the park's situation or their plan for the park in the future.
