Nearly 6,000 people have been killed in traffic crashes across Vietnam since the beginning of this year, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang said during a memorial ceremony for victims of traffic accidents on Saturday.
The memorial ceremony was organized by the National Traffic Safety Committee in collaboration with Vietnam Television (VTV) in Hanoi.
This is the 11th year that Vietnam has joined the world to organize memorial activities for victims of traffic accidents and share the losses with their loved ones.

The entire political system and people of Vietnam have made great efforts to minimize traffic accidents and related consequences, Minister Thang said at the event.
However, nearly 7,000 people are still killed each year in traffic accidents, while more than 11,000 others suffer lifelong injuries or disabilities.
In the first 11 months of this year, traffic crashes have claimed the lives of nearly 6,000 people in the country.

At the memorial ceremony, attendees paid tribute to the deceased victims and vowed to take practical actions to reduce traffic accidents.
"I call on all individuals and organizations to strictly abide by the law on traffic safety in order to build a friendly and civilized traffic environment," the transport minister said.
