Twenty-eight traffic accidents claimed 13 lives and injured 21 people across Vietnam on New Year’s Day, according to the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.

All of the accidents involved road traffic while no crashes occurred on railways and waterways.

Traffic police officers booked more than 7,000 cases of traffic safety violations and fined violators nearly VND12 billion (US$507,722) during the ongoing three-day New Year holiday that started on Saturday.

Those included 1,330 cases of alcohol concentration violations, three cases of drug violations, 1,058 cases violating speed rules, and 186 cases of illegally expanding trunks and overloading.

Fifty-eight cases were detected on highways, where the violating drivers were fined VND197.4 million ($8,352).

Officers temporarily seized 140 cars, 1,920 motorbikes, and 18 other vehicles, while stripping 1,159 drivers of driver's licenses of all kinds.
