The Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security said on Friday that 25 traffic accidents happened across Vietnam on Thursday, the first day of the ongoing holiday marking the 2023 Lunar New Year, killing 14 people and injuring 17 others.
All traffic accidents happened on the roads, which were packed with passengers leaving big cities for their hometowns.
There were no accidents in rail and waterway traffic.
A particularly serious traffic accident occurred between a truck and a motorcycle carrying three people on a section of National Highway 55 in Ham Tan District, south-central Binh Thuan Province on Thursday evening.
As a result, the three people on the motorbike died.
Functional forces determined that the truck driver, who tested zero for alcohol concentration and negative for drugs, encroached on the motorbike lane, leading to the collision.
Traffic police officers also booked and imposed fines worth over VND11 billion (US$469,000) on more than 4,600 road traffic violators on Thursday.
Some 1,100 drivers had their driver’s licences temporarily revoked.
Nearly 1,400 drivers were caught drunk driving, a 3.6-fold increase compared to the same period last year.
