People often take their dogs to the shady, tree-lined path along Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal in Ho Chi Minh City, but they rarely clean up after their pets, leaving green spaces fouled with excrement.

Truong Sa Street and Hoang Sa Street along the canal, which runs about eight kilometers through seven districts, including District 1, District 3, District 10, Phu Nhuan District, Tan Binh District, Go Vap District, and Binh Thanh District, have become a toilet for dogs.

As observed by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on the morning of February 18, a young man carried his dog on a motorbike and let the pet poop and pee wherever they stopped along Truong Sa Street in Phu Nhuan District.

Later, another person took a pack of four dogs to poop on Hoang Sa Street near the Cong Ly Bridge in District 3.

Tuoi Tre reporter toured the route again on Monday afternoon and saw a man pull his motorbike over to the side of the road near the Nguyen Van Troi Bridge in District 3 before two dogs jumped out of the bike and pooped in the tree shade.

“Many people are so irresponsible that they bring dogs to this green space to poop, leaving behind strong odors,” said Chau Thanh Son, a street cleaning worker in Phu Nhuan District.

“Having a pet is a person’s own hobby, and it is their responsibility to keep the public hygiene,” Son added.

Thanh Hung, a resident of District 1, said that dogs pooping along the mentioned green space by the canal has become a common scene during his daily jog on Hoang Sa Street.

“Many dogs were not muzzled and threatened to bite people,” Hung said.

“A lot of people were bitten by the dogs while walking and exercising here.”

The owners of the dogs rarely pick up after the pets as their twice-a-day routine only includes stopping their motorbikes by the green space, letting the dogs poop, then driving away.

The dog owners even threaten to hit sanitation workers and local people when they complain about the issue.
