Police in Hanoi said on Tuesday that they had arrested a car driver for drifting to show off his driving skill on a road in Hoan Kiem District, disturbing public order the day before.
The People’s Procuracy of Hoan Kiem District approved the arrest warrant against Nguyen Ngoc Thang, a 39-year-old local, who drove his four-seater car in a drift mode, turned on the headlights, and caused chaos around the roundabout in front of the Hanoi Opera House in the small hours of Monday.
He left the site before local police officers arrived.
The officers launched an investigation and summoned Thang to the district’s police station right on the afternoon of the same day.
At the police station, Thang confessed to his violation on public order and had his car temporarily seized.
Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner, but it causes the rear wheels to slide.
The technique is usually used by professional racers in competitions.
