Police in Hau Giang Province, southern Vietnam detained a 54-year-old gardener on Tuesday for staging a theft to appropriate US$60,000 along with other assets from his Vietnamese-American employer.
The Vietnamese-American woman on Monday reported to police officers in Dong Phu Commune, Chau Thanh District, Hau Giang Province that she lost $60,000, VND5 million ($214), a mobile phone, and some papers.
Police later became suspicious of Le Minh Trang, a resident in southern Ca Mau Province and a gardener of the Vietnamese-American woman.
Trang pled guilty after being questioned by police officers, declaring that his employer asked him to keep her money many times but he appropriated $47,000 for personal spending.
He was afraid that his violation might be detected when his employer returned to Vietnam, so he stole the rest of the money, the mobile phone, and the papers, and hid them in a bush on Monday.
He later lied to his employer that the money that she had given to him earlier was stolen.
Police have seized the exhibits and will continue investigating the case.
