An 18-month-old boy was hospitalized on Tuesday for severe head injuries after he was brutally mauled by his neighbor’s dog in Phu Tho Province, northern Vietnam.
The attack left the boy with a torn scalp that exposed his skull.
The Hung Vuong General Hospital in Phu Tho said on Tuesday that it had admitted the boy named V.G.B..
His family said that he was visiting the neighbor’s house when the dog attacked him.
The family immediately rushed him to the hospital.
He was in a panic and suffered severe blood loss at the time of hospitalization, according to the Hung Vuong General Hospital.
A computerized tomography scan showed that he suffered subdural hematoma and a skull fracture measuring some three centimeters.
Doctors gave him first aid, relieved pain, and gave him a rabies vaccine.
They reached a consensus to treat the wound through surgery. After the surgery, the boy was conscious and his indicators were within safety limits.
The child was later transferred to the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation for further treatment.
Doctors said many dog attacks on children were due to adults’ negligence.
Dogs must be put into cages, be chained, and wear muzzles and must not be left unbridled. Parents should not let their children come into close contact with dangerous animals to prevent regrettable consequences.
In case of a dog bite, the victims should wash the wound with clean water and soap within 15 minutes, then sterilize it with alcohol of 45-70 degrees or iodine tincture to minimize the virus volume.
People must also get vaccinated against rabies within the first 24 hours after being bitten.
