The Vietnamese prime minister has issued a decision to force Vu Hong Nam, former ambassador to Japan, to quit his job as a disciplinary measure for his violations and wrongdoings while on duty.

The disciplinary action against Nam took effect from December 30 last year, according to the decision signed by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang.

The Party Central Committee’s Secretariat had earlier expelled Nam from the Party for his degradation in political ideology, morality and lifestyle.

Besides, he took bribes; infringed Party and State regulations; and violated the don’ts for Party members and the rules on responsibility for exemplary performance.

His violations caused serious consequences, sparked public concern, and damaged the prestige and reputation of Party and diplomatic organizations.

In December last year, the Investigative Police Agency under the Ministry of Public Security filed charges against Nam for allegedly receiving bribes when the country organized repatriation flights during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nam, born in Nam Dinh Province, northern Vietnam, in 1963, has many years’ experience in the diplomatic field and held multiple positions.

He was appointed as deputy minister of Foreign Affairs in 2014, and served as the chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs.

In August 2018, Nam was named as Vietnamese ambassador to Japan.
