Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has approved a project to power Con Dao Island off the southern Vietnamese province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau using submarine cables.
The government assigned the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) to conduct the project.
Under the project, EVN will develop a 110/22kV transformer station on Con Dao and a new 110kV power transmission line from a 220kV transformer station in Vinh Chau Town of the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang to the transformer station on the island.
The project, which requires an estimated investment of some VND4.9 trillion (US$209 million), including VND2.5 trillion ($106.7 million) from the state coffers and VND2.4 trillion ($102.3 million) from EVN’s budget, will be executed from 2023 to 2026.
The government assigned relevant localities to complete site clearance to ensure the progress of the project and the land use effectiveness.
The investor of the project must assess its impact on the environment and conduct it as scheduled and in line with the law.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade will instruct EVN to complete dossiers for the project, and choose technology and equipment to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the investment.
Relevant ministries and agencies were assigned to guide the land handover and land lease, the conversion of land use purposes, the assessment of the project’s impact on the environment, and the handover of sea areas.
Earlier, the Ministry of Industry and Trade affirmed that the project was feasible and could meet Con Dao’s development objectives.
At present, the power supplied to Con Dao cannot meet the demand of islanders' daily lives, not to mention electricity for industrial production, services, and tourism.
Diesel-fired power plants on the island have failed to reverse the shortage.
