A 38-year-old doctorate holder in Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam was detained for allegedly stealing VND128 million (US$5,362) and a computer from Hong Duc University, where he works, local police confirmed on Monday.

The suspect was identified as Do Ngoc Ha, a native of Trieu Son Town in the province.

Police were notified of a property theft taking place in the accounting department of the school, located in the provincial capital city of Thanh Hoa, on June 23.

The preliminary investigation results showed that Ha prepared a key cutter, a hammer, a screwdriver and kept them in his office.

He took advantage of a chance when it was raining heavily and there were few people in his workplace at around 9:30 pm the day to break the accounting department’s door and steal the money and the computer.

Then, he took a motorbike taxi ride to different places to destroy evidence of his crime.

Ha was found to have used the stolen money to pay off his debts.

Thanh Hoa investigators pressed charges against him and transferred his case to the provincial police department for further investigation.

Prior to the arrest, Ha was teaching at the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery.
