A rumor recently spread on Facebook about 12 crocodiles escaping from captivity in Thoi Binh District, Ca Mau Province, southern Vietnam is completely false, a local official confirmed on Tuesday.

Tran Minh Nhan, vice-chairman of the Thoi Binh People’s Committee, said the district reported the issue to the provincial administration and relevant agencies for further steps to tackle it as per the prevailing regulations.

Nguyen Van Den, deputy head of the provincial Department of Information and Communications, also confirmed that this is fake news.

On Monday, a Facebook user wrote in their account named ‘Thanh Lâm’ that: “Warning: 12 crocodiles [which have been reared for so long] have escaped from their cages in Thoi Binh, Ca Mau. Let your relatives know if you see this video.”

The post received many reactions from netizens who mainly expressed their concern over the news.

The provincial Department of Information and Communications will verify and investigate this Facebook account owner to prevent further provoking public concerns, Den said.
