Duong Van Ngo, the last public letter writer at the Saigon Central Post Office in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, died at his home on Tuesday at the age of 94.

Ngo earned the title of Vietnam’s longest-serving letter writer in Vietnam’s Record Book in 2009.

He was born in 1930 and began working at the Thi Nghe Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City when he was 16 years old.

In 1952, he moved to the Saigon Central Post Office.

After he retired in 1990, he asked to continue working at the post office.

He helped illiterate residents write letters, as well as translated them into English or French before they were sent abroad.

In a past interview, Ngo said that over his decades-long career, he had written and translated millions of letters and postcards to be sent to countries all over the world.

Considered the mainstay of the Saigon Central Post Office, it was rare for the building to be mentioned without Ngo being mentioned as well.

Visitors from all over the world would stop by the post office specifically to meet Ngo and hear his stories of Ho Chi Minh City through the decades.
