The Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children in Da Nang City, central Vietnam announced on Tuesday that they were providing medical attention to a two-year-old patient who suffered significant burns after accidentally consuming a toilet cleaning solution.
The hospital admitted the child on Saturday.
The boy’s family members said that he drank the toilet cleaning solution because he thought it was a kind of soft drink.
Doctor Tran Long Quan from the Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children said the boy’s injuries were mainly on his skin and mouth. No damage to his esophagus and stomach was found.
“We are closely monitoring the patient and providing him with intensive care," Quan said.
The Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children informed that toilet cleaning solutions are acidic or alkaline so they are extremely corrosive.
As for the two-year-old child in Da Nang, he drank the solution which was strongly acidic, to the extent that his father also suffered burns after carrying the baby in his arms while not directly touching the baby’s skin.
When the solution is put on people’s skin, it can cause painful burns. It can also kill individuals who drink or inhale it.
The Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children advises that chemical-based products, such as drain unclogging and toilet cleaning solutions, be kept far from children.
