A forest protection unit in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, southern Vietnam recently imposed an VND11 million (US$458) fine on a man who destroyed a protection forest on Nho Mountain in Vung Tau City.

Nguyen Vu A.H., a 26-year-old from neighboring Dong Nai Province, paid the fine on Wednesday, according to the Vung Tau-Phu My forest protection unit.

The unit and local authorities had previously discovered that H. had hired workmen to clear shrubs, trim branches, and fell trees in a forested area on Nho Mountain under the ownership and management of the Vung Tau City People’s Committee.

The affected area spanned 548 square meters and the damage has resulted in harm to 50 forest trees ranging from four to 15 centimeters in diameter.

H.’s team also felled numerous trees in areas of land situated at the base of the mountain, which were initially designated as agricultural land in 1999.

These plots collectively spanned an extensive 3,200 square meters, and by 2015, each parcel had undergone a conversion of 150 square meters for residential purposes.

According to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s observation, only a small portion of the mentioned land is level, while the remainder is situated amidst two tall mountain slopes.
