Residents of Binh Thuan Province, south-central Vietnam were struggling with sand and mud that flowed into their houses and flooded local routes following a heavy downpour on Sunday evening.

Authorities had to close off Lac Long Quan Street in Tien Thanh Commune under Phan Thiet City after the deluge of sand blocked the road and destroyed a bridge.

Sand and mud slid down hills into residents’ houses after a heavy rain battered Tien Phu and Tien Hai mountainous villages in the commune on Sunday afternoon.

A huge volume of sand and mud made it tougher for vehicles to move and locals to clear their houses.

The abutments of a bridge on Lac Long Quan Street collapsed due to the sand and mud slides, threatening a hotel standing near its foot.

The owner of the hotel quickly asked guests and employees to evacuate to safe shelters.

Traffic police officers guarded through the night to prevent vehicles from entering the areas covered in sand and mud to ensure their safety.

According to a Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporter’s observation, some 10 households in Tien Phu Village under Tien Thanh Commune were affected by sand and mud slides.

“At about 4:00 pm on Sunday, it started to rain. My family always closes the back door when it rains heavily. However, we could not do anything this time as sand quickly crashed into our house just 30 minutes after the downpour,” Nguyen Thi Bich Tram, a villager, recounted.

Many devices and furniture in the house were swept outside by sand sliding down a hill behind her home, she said.

This was the worst sand slide that she had ever witnessed, she said, adding that the four members of her family quickly ran out of the house.

Many locals said the sand spread was that terrible.
