Local authorities in Tien Giang Province, situated in Vietnam's Mekong Delta, honored a man this weekend for his courageous act of rescuing a three-year-old boy who had been callously thrown into a river by a drug abuser.
Phan Quoc Huy, aged 30, was awarded a certificate of merit at a ceremony conducted by the administration of Cai Be District in the province on Saturday.
This recognition serves as a high appreciation for Huy's courageous act, which occurred six days earlier, in rescuing the three-year-old boy.
The person responsible for throwing the boy into the Ma Voi River is identified as Le Huynh Hai, a 25-year-old local man.
He was apprehended by authorities one day after committing this cruel act.
As outlined in the case file, Hai, having consumed drugs, walked from his residence in Hau My Trinh Commune to Cai Nua Market in Hau Thanh Commune on the morning of February 11.
Around 6:00 pm on the same day, Hai was positioned near a gasoline station in Hau Thanh when he observed the three-year-old boy, L.N.K.T., seated on a bench in front of his residence nearby.
Hai approached T., took the boy in his arms, and proceeded toward the river, approximately 80 meters away from the victim's house.
Upon reaching the riverbank, Hai callously threw T. into the water before walking away.
Witnessing Hai's reprehensible act, Huy promptly rushed to the river, leaped in, and successfully rescued the boy, bringing him safely ashore.
Following the rescue, Huy transported T. to a local hospital for thorough medical examination and care. The boy recovered and he was later discharged from the hospital.
After receiving reports about the incident, local police launched a search for Hai and managed to apprehend him on February 12 in My Hoi Commune within the same district.
Hai has admitted guilt in committing the crime, and local authorities are currently proceeding with the necessary legal procedures to address his actions.
