The Ho Chi Minh City administration has announced good news for book enthusiasts as the city will set up more book streets and reading spaces between now and March 2025.
The upcoming launch of the book streets is part of a plan recently passed by the municipal administration to develop book streets and good reading habits among city dwellers in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Reunification Day (April 30, 1975-2025).
The plan is to be co-implemented by the city’s Department of Information and Communications, district-level administrations, and the Vietnam Publishers Association, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
As per this plan, the southern metropolis will open book streets and reading spaces in Binh Tan District, District 7, and the outlying district of Cu Chi.
Meanwhile, the Nguyen Van Binh book street in District 1, the inaugural one of its kind in Ho Chi Minh City, will undergo further enhancements with the aim of transforming it into an iconic cultural attraction for the city.
The second book street of the southern hub opened to the public in December last year. It is located in Thu Duc City, under the jurisdiction of Ho Chi Minh City.
Apart from opening more book streets, the city will provide five million printed and electronic books for libraries citywide from February this year till March next year.
The local education, information, and communications authorities were tasked with hosting more events to promote the culture of reading among city schools.
The Department of Information and Communications has been instructed to propose measures aimed at annually increasing the percentage of people with a penchant for reading.
The city emphasized that fostering and promoting positive reading habits constitute a significant goal it has been actively pursuing in recent years.
