A man was recently found unconscious and later did not survive after suffering fatigue during a football game in Tuyen Quang Province, northern Vietnam.
Hung Vuong Son Duong General Clinic in Tuyen Quang’s Son Duong District reported the incident on Friday.
According to witnesses, the 37-year-old man took part in a football game, then complained about exhaustion before lying down on the field.
The game continued, and around 30 minutes later, someone noticed he was unresponsive and called for an ambulance.
The emergency crew of Hung Vuong Son Duong General Clinic promptly arrived and found the victim in a state of unconsciousness and cardiac arrest.
Doctors then diagnosed him with a stroke.
Despite intensive cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the victim succumbed due to late treatment.
Previously, Bach Mai Hospital had received similar cases of sudden death among amateur football players.
Doctors noted that such cases typically involve amateur football players in their 30s and 40s who have undiagnosed pre-existing cardiovascular and blood pressure conditions.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Lan Hieu, director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital, the cardiovascular causes of sudden death in young athletes include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy accounting for 36 percent, congenital and acquired abnormalities of the coronary arteries at 23 percent, suspected hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at eight percent, myocarditis at six percent, right ventricular dysplasia causing arrhythmia at four percent, mitral valve prolapse at three percent, rupture of aortic aneurysm at three percent, aortic valve stenosis at two percent, and dilated cardiomyopathy at two percent.
Other causes contribute to five percent of cases.
Assoc. Prof. Hieu emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of physical activity on the cardiovascular system and implementing early screening and diagnostic measures to minimize the risk of sudden and unfortunate events.
